Inbound agents in Malaysia hopeful as new route opens
Qatar Airways is further increasing its services to leisure destinations in Asia with a new thrice-weekly route between Doha and Penang starting on February 6, spurring hopes among Malaysian inbound agents for stronger European traffic.
The new service will be the first long-haul flight to Penang, an island destination in the northern region of the country that mostly gets air connections with other parts of Southeast Asia and North Asia.
Diethelm Travel Malaysia’s managing director, Manfred Kurz, believes the new flights are “perfect” for promoting the northern region of Malaysia to Europeans. Popular destinations in the north include Langkawi, Kedah and the Belum Temenggor Forest Reserve in Perak state.
As the Germans and others “like to move around more and tend to end their holiday with a beach stay”, Kurz predicts that an ‘open jaw arrangement’ would appeal to travellers, where they start off in Kuala Lumpur before proceeding overland to Perak and Penang before leaving for Doha on the new Qatar Airways flight.
Qatar Airways is also launching direct flights to Pattaya, its fifth route to Thailand, starting in late January.
