Meeting busts myth of fast-growing Arctic cruises

“Expedition cruise tourism can help protect environment”

A workshop held in Ottawa, Canada, recently looked at Arctic cruise tourism, concluding that Arctic cruise tourism is not a fast growing industry.

Held under the guidance of the Arctic Council’s Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment working group, cruise operators and researchers affiliated to the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators corrected what they said was the myth about large increases in Arctic cruise tourism.

A false idea of the real number of visitors may create too high expectations, the association said.

“Governments might put too large an emphasis on business opportunities, while authorities may consider the need for new regulations based on incorrect presumptions,” the association said in a statement. “This can in turn lead to unnecessarily strict regulations and a decline in local tourism and business opportunities.”

Frigg Jørgensen, the association’s executive director: “Expedition cruise tourism can be a driver of environment protection and a better local economy – if measures are based on facts and if operators, local communities and regulators work together.”
