Meeting in Moscow over downing of flight MH17

Dutch foreign minister Bert Koenders meets Sergei Lavrov
As the Netherlands continues to lead an international investigation into the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, where around two-thirds of the 298 victims were Dutch, the country’s foreign minister Bert Koenders visited Moscow to discuss the issue.
It is believed that the plane was destroyed with a surface-to-air missile launched by pro-Russian forces in eastern Ukraine, but Russia denies this. A Dutch Safety Board report on the cause of the crash, which occurred on July 17 last year, is due in October.
Koenders met his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov to discuss the investigation’s efforts to prosecute the suspects, who have not yet been identified. The two sides also spoke about a Russian blacklist of European politicians.
“They weren’t easy discussions because there are many areas where we don’t agree,” Koenders said. “But they were discussions that needed to happen.”
Lavrov, meanwhile, said he supported a UN Security Council resolution that commits the international community to bringing those responsible to justice.
