Missing planes may become terror missiles

Intelligence agencies warn of new 9/11-style attacks

Commercial passenger planes taken by Islamic militants could be used in a new round of terrorist attacks, intelligence agencies are warning.

“There are a number of commercial airliners in Libya that are missing,” an official told The Washington Free Beacon. “We found out on September 11 what can happen with hijacked planes.”

Intelligence documents being circulated in the US government say that up to 11 aircraft are missing and could be used in new terrorist attacks. The warning comes in the wake of increasing chaos enveloping Libya and the airport in Tripoli.

Militias and the Fajr Libya (Libya Dawn) Islamist alliance took control of the airport on August 22 after weeks of fierce fighting. The Fajr Libya militiamen come mostly from the city of Misrata, east of the capital.

Libya’s former authorities are internally exiled in Tobruk, 1,500 kilometres from the capital. The government admits it has lost control of ministries and transport networks. Meanwhile, jihadists control most of Benghazi, Libya’s second city.

A rival body to the parliament, the General National Congress, has named a pro-Islamist figure, Omar al-Hassi, to form a “salvation government”.
