More routes, more passengers at SAS

Airline sees more than 7% more pax in December

SAS appears to be experiencing a boost in its passenger numbers, with 7.1% more people flying the airline in December compared to the same month a year ago. Around 1.9 million people took a SAS flight during the month. The airline also said that more people were reserving seats in advance.

“We had an eventful 2014, with more passengers on board and also a higher proportion of seats being booked across nine consecutive months,” SAS CEO Richard Gustafson commented in a press release.

Fewer people flew SAS on intercontinental flights, however, with passenger numbers on these routes down 3.8%. The airline played down this statistic.

“We have had great growth internationally in the other months in 2014, so it is not a trend that fewer people are travelling with intercontinental routes,” media officer Henrik Edström told The Local.

But he did accept that there was “ongoing price pressure on the market” and that cutting costs was a priority.

SAS plans to launch nine new routes to holiday and city-break destinations this summer season. Direct routes will start between Stockholm and Ankara, Budapest and Faro, for example; between Copenhagen and both Edinburgh and Ankara; between Oslo and Salzburg; and from Gothenburg to Alanya, Dublin and Bergen.

Stockholm-Gothenburg will get an extra morning frequency on Mondays in both directions. And flights between Stockholm and Hong Kong are to launch in February.
