Myanmar green-lights hotel development on islands

Hotel projects mushroom on Myanmar’s Mergui archipelago
With visitor arrivals rising in all corners of Myanmar as it opens up politically and economically, new hotel projects are mushrooming across the country’s virgin Mergui (also known as Myeik) archipelago.
According to the Myanmar Investment Commission, 27 companies have proposed new hotel projects there, and 13 were given the go-ahead last week for development on islands such as Kyunphelar, Ngaman and Kayinkwa.
One of these is by UAE-based investment company Gecko Holdings, which together with local company Kyaw Win Phyo, has formed a joint venture called Mokan to build a hotel on a 2,060ha site on Kyunphelar.
Meanwhile, Singapore firm Zochwell Group is expecting to sign a contract to develop a US$1.2 billion project, including a casino, on Salon Island. And Myeik Public Corporation says it is investing US$4 million in the development of a resort hotel on Kadan Island.
These projects will considerably increase the room count in Mergui, which has just five hotels with a total of 196 rooms. Located in Myanmar’s far south, Mergui is a priority area for development under the government’s tourism master plan released in 2013.
Foreign investors are flocking to Myanmar, most of them from Asian neighbours such as Singapore, Vietnam and Thailand. Investment by both local and foreign investors in the country’s hotel sector is expected to reach US$3 billion this year.
