NCL to stage kinky hit musical on new ship

Besides the drag-accented musical Kinky Boots, there’s also laser tag, VR, go-karts, waterslides and more.

Norwegian Cruise Line has confirmed a partnership with the colourful musical Kinky Boots on its new ship Encore when it launches in autumn 2019.

The award-winning stage show with music by Cindy Lauper will be the headline act on Norwegian Encore, TTG reports. It tells the true story of a shoe factory owner who revives his failing business by making footwear for drag artists.

The news coincided with the cruise vessel’s keel laying ceremony at the Meyer Werft shipyard – where the lead character Lola performed with three other cast members.

Additional entertainment that originally debuted on Norwegian Bliss, which entered service into April, will also be available on Norwegian Encore.

This includes an interactive cocktails and theatre show called Happy Hour Prohibition: The Musical, and live performances by a Beatles cover band in a show called The Cavern Club.

Drive off the edge
Norwegian Encore will also boast the biggest go-kart track at sea, which will cover two levels and feature ten turns – and four points that extend up to four metres over the side of the ship.

Encore will also feature the Galaxy Pavilion, an indoor virtual reality complex showcasing cutting-edge technology and interactive gaming including an escape room.

The cruise industry’s only open-air laser tag arena, which debuted on Bliss, will appear on Encore but this time as a resurrected lost city of Atlantis.

Encore will also feature NCL’s Aqua Park, including two huge waterslides, one of which extends 3.4 metres over the edge of the ship, looping down to the deck below.

The new ship will accommodate up to 4,000 guests and cruise from Miami every Sunday on seven-day voyages to the eastern Caribbean. The first is lined up for November 17 next year in a season that continues until April 12, 2020.

About Kinky Boots, Andy Stuart, NCL’s president and chief executive, said: “Today’s surprise Kinky Boots performance showcases the evolution of the meaningful and unforgettable experiences we are dedicated to providing our guests. We are very excited to be the first to feature this award-winning musical at sea.”
