Nepal tourism gets back on its feet

Tourism recovering well after devastating earthquake
Nepal’s tourism industry is recovering well after the devastating earthquake of April 2015, with a 15% rise in arrivals in the first half of 2016.
It was a “rough year” in 2015, said Subodh Thapa, a representative of Chitwan National Park, with some of the gap filled by domestic tourism.
But this year the national park has seen recovery in the markets of India and China. Demand from Europe is expected to pick up later this year.
“There is no fear among tourists. We have seen a lot of FITs,” Subodh Thapa said.
Sanjay Mathema, president at Kathmandu-based Travel World Experiences, is also optimistic about the destination’s recovery, seeing encouraging signs in the incentive market.
“All our tour operators have put Nepal back in their brochures since early this year in preparation for the peak [October to March] travel season.”
Hotel brands including Hilton and Four Seasons opening in Nepal next year reflect investor confidence in the destination, noted Shradha Shrestha of the Nepal Tourism Board.
Also helping Nepal get back on its feet is the Visit Nepal Year 2018 campaign, the first big push for international tourism and part of a 10-year National Tourism Strategic Action Plan. The aim is to eventually push international arrivals past one million, 400,000 more than this year’s target.
