New bomb attacks in Thailand

Bombs placed outside hotel in coastal town
There is no connection, Thailand’s government claims, between two bombings last night in a coastal town that killed one person and wounded 30 and the recent wave of deadly attacks in popular tourist destinations.
The two bombs exploded at the Southern View Hotel in the southern town of Pattani. This is less than two weeks after the earlier, still unexplained bombings hit seven provinces. Those attacks, which may have come from southern insurgent groups, killed four and wounded many others, including foreign tourists.
“I am sure that the incident in Pattani last night has nothing to do with the seven provinces attacks,” Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan told reporters without giving further details.
The first bomb late last night exploded in a carpark behind the hotel, causing no casualties. But a second blast at the hotel entrance, in a stolen hospital pick-up truck, was more deadly.
Thailand has been fighting a slow but brutal war with insurgents in three provinces bordering Malaysia, including Pattani, since 2004, killing more than 6,500 people so far. Peace talks under the government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra but have stalled since the military took control in 2014.
