Two New Ships for Norwegian

Norwegian Cruise Line is investing further in its informal “Freestyle” cruise ships by ordering two new vessels to be delivered in 2013 and 2014.

Building on the success of the launch of the 4,100-passenger Norwegian Epic, the company’s biggest ship to date, whose maiden voyage took place in June this year, Norwegian Cruise Line will invest €1.2bn in the two vessels. The “third-generation” Freestyle cruises offered by Norwegian Cruise Lines have 60% more passenger space than the company’s other ships. The Norwegian Epic has attracted popular acclaim for perks such as an aqua park with the only tube and bowl water slide at sea.

The 143,500 ton ships will be constructed by Meyer Werft in Germany, unlike the Norwegian Epic, which was built by STX Europe (previously Aker Yards) in Saint-Nazaire, France. A second vessel agreed on by NCL and STX was never built due to a dispute between the two companies. “Building on the incredible success and popularity of Norwegian Epic, we are taking the best of what our newest ship has to offer,” said Norwegian Cruise Line CEO Kevin Sheehan.

“Our decision to add two new ships reflects the significant progress we have made in improving our operating performance and repositioning the company over the last several years, as well as the strong market demand we are seeing for Norwegian Epic and our other ships,” he said.
