New York hotel boom adds cheaper rooms

Big Apple may no longer be US’s priciest hotel city

New York City has until now been the USA’s most expensive city for a hotel stay. The average room costs around $300 a night. But soon visitors will find a range of new and more affordable options. The slim tower of the city’s first-ever Best Western Premier will open in Manhattan next month with small rooms going for $160 a night, excluding taxes. Four suites with fine views will cost $55 extra. Next door, a Hyatt Place is due to open in a week’s time with rates on its website starting at $195. And a Holiday Inn Express has just opened near 6th Avenue with rates starting at $199.
The hotels are part of new building boom for mid-priced hotels in Manhattan – a boom that is taking off as the recession fades.
