Hotels.com works with Swedish tech company on Danish rooms
The accommodation booking site Hotels.com has revealed details about a pilot project for a mobile room key, allowing guests to spend less time checking in and more time enjoying their hotel stays. The pilot is to take place in Denmark.
The mobile app will allow guests to generate electronic room keys, check in and check out at partner hotels. A prototype was demonstrated at a conference in Las Vegas last December.
At the time, Johan Svanstrom president of Expedia-owned Hotels.com, said that “quite a few hotel chains” were interested in trialling the technology.
Now it is clear that it will initially be trialled at three CABINN-branded properties in Denmark, with the intention to roll out more widely to interested hotel partners over the coming years.
The first of the three CABINN hotels to trial the technology is the CABINN Metro in Copenhagen, which will be offering the mobile key to all guests who book through Hotels.com.
Hotels.com is partnering with Zaplox, a third-party vendor based in Lund, Sweden whose software interacts with its hardware installations at more than hotels.
“Expedia Group, with Hotels.com in its portfolio, is a company that has very successfully built a global platform for hotel and flight bookings,” said Zaplox CEO Magnus Friberg.
“With Zaplox’s solution for mobile keys, check in and check out now included, they can offer hotels more value, all available directly from the guest’s mobile device.”
Hotels have been looking ahead to smartphone-powered key technology since 2010, but the concept only became serious two years ago when Hilton started to offer it to guests via an app at several of its brands.
