Nordics to benefit from new wellness trend

“Forest bathing” could be the trend to watch in 2015

In its spa and wellness forecast for 2015, Spafinder Wellness 365 lists “the top 10 spa and wellness trends set to unfold in 2015 and beyond”. Spafinder Wellness 365 has been in the business of global trend-tracking for 12 years and says its list is definitive.

Top of the list is forest bathing, or “mindfulness meets nature”. This Japanese concept (“shinrin-yoku”) has nothing to do with water. It simply means quietly walking, with a mind absorbing the sounds, scents, colours and “feel” of the forest. But it’s the medical evidence that’s taking this idea global. Chemicals that trees emit (phytoncides) show a long-lasting impact on people’s immune system markers. So more “forest therapy” trails, more doctors prescribing time in forests, more forest bathing programming at spa retreats and more chic “wild forest/nature” resorts are likely in 2015.

One example given is the “stunning” Treehotel in Sweden, which is focused on “the significance of trees for human beings.”

Another trend listed is luxury travellers’ appetite for the different and new and “beyond the stars” experiences (examples: Fregate Island Resort (Seychelles), The Brando (French Polynesia), Amenoi Resort (Vietnam), Golden Door (US), and the Antara Palace Wellness Destination Spa in Cyprus).

Or there’s the rising trend of spa on arrival or en route, such as Cheval Blanc Randheli (Maldives) free Jet Lag Recovery massage that kicks off all guests’ stays.
