Norway beats Denmark as world’s happiest

Danes ousted as Nordic nations lead the pack
Denmark has ranked top in the World Happiness Report for three of the last four years, but now the ‘happy throne’ has been taken by Norway, while other Nordic countries are close behind.
The list positions 155 countries in order of happiness in a global initiative for the UN by Sustainable Development Solutions Network. And despite its astronomical prices and terrible football team, Norway ranks the happiest nation in the world.
“It’s a remarkable case in point. By choosing to produce oil deliberately and investing the proceeds for the benefit of future generations, Norway has protected itself from the volatile ups and downs of many other oil-rich economies,” comments Professor John Helliwell of the University of British Columbia, one of the team behind the report.
“This emphasis on the future over the present is made easier by high levels of mutual trust, shared purpose, generosity and good governance. All of these are found in Norway, as well as in the other top countries.”
The top five on the index are mostly Nordic, with Iceland, Switzerland and Finland taking up the rest, and the Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Sweden in the top 10. Least happy is Central African Republic, with Burundi, Tanzania, Syria and Rwanda not far behind.
