Norway nature group calls for tourist limits

Pulpit Rock and Troll’s Tongue see massive rise in visitors
The main hiking group in Norway says that limits must be put in place to control the massive increases in the numbers of tourists hiking to the country’s natural attractions.
There is a risk that the rise in tourism can damage the most popular sites, such as Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) and Trolltunga (Troll’s Tongue), Lasse Heimdal of Friluftsliv warns.
It is “urgent that we now take measures to ensure that outdoor life is safeguarded”, he told broadcaster NRK. “If the large loads damage nature, the authorities are obliged to impose countermeasures. Limiting access can be one of the measures.”
Despite the steep, three-hour walk to reach it and an equally steep rise in the number of tourists who need help after coming poorly prepared for the long haul, the breath-taking viewpoint Pulpit Rock has seen visitors rise from 60,000 in 2009 to 300,000. The Trolltunga promontory’s visitors have risen from 1,000 to a 100,000 over just five years.
