Norwegian adds new “slimline” seats to 737 MAX

The airline is introducing slimmer seats, now receiving the first of 12 new-look 737 MAX aircraft this year.

The airline Norwegian says it is retrofitting its existing fleet of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft with an upgraded and more spacious cabin featuring new lighter and more comfortable slimline seats.

It recently took delivery of its first MAX with the upgraded cabin, with seats that are “specifically designed for more comfort on longer routes and will give taller passengers more personal space”, the carrier promises.

Norwegian was Boeing’s European launch partner for the 737 MAX last year and will take delivery of 12 of the new 189-seat aircraft in 2018, with a further 88 on order. It has more than 100 737 MAX planes on order in total.

The planes fly Norwegian’s transatlantic routes to New York and Providence near Boston, while the MAX is also gradually replacing the older Boeing 737-800s on short-haul routes. The first MAX to feature the new RECARO 3710C seat entered service last month and is flying transatlantic routes.

Less weight
The new seat has a 30-inch (76.2cm) pitch and is 16.8 inches wide, creating extra space, Norwegian says, at knee-level.

Each seat also weighs just 10kg, one kilo less than the previous model, significantly reducing weight and fuel burn, Norwegian says.

“More than 370,000 customers have flown Norwegian between the UK and Ireland and the US East Coast and now thousands more passengers can fly in slimmer seats that provide more space for the longer flights,” Thomas Ramdahl, Norwegian’s chief commercial officer, said.

“The Boeing 737 MAX’s versatility can provide passengers with lower fares on direct transatlantic routes and shorter flights as we plan to replace older aircraft as we maintain a young, modern and fuel-efficient fleet.”
