Norwegian island to become casino paradise?

“A casino on Munkholmen would shut Caesars Palace in Las Vegas”

A young Norwegian politician has called for Monkholmen, an island fortress near Trondheim, to be turned into a casino.

Sivert Bjørnstad, 23, is from the right-wing liberal Progress Party, which is currently part of the country’s coalition government. He wants the island to be used for poker tournaments as soon as his party makes playing the game for cash bets legal in Norway.

“A casino on Munkholmen would shut Caesars Palace in Las Vegas,” he told the regional newspaper Adresseavisen. “A casino located in the ocean, it would be absolutely wonderful.”

The island is already a popular tourist attraction. In the Viking era it was used as an execution site with severed heads placed on stakes as a warning to visitors. Later, in the 12th century, it became the site of Norway’s first monastery, and in the 17th to 19th centuries it was a fort and a prison. In World War II it was an anti-aircraft gun station.

“Imagine arriving at the island on a beautiful summer evening in a boat, walking up the cobblestone hill to the Tower Building with torches on both sides. It would be fantastic, and it would really put Munkholmen on the map,” Bjørnstad said.
