Norwegian opens new base in Madrid

Carrier continues to expand Spanish route network

Norwegian has announced it will open a new base of operations in Madrid in summer 2014. It is also launching six new routes from the Spanish capital to Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki, Hamburg, Warsaw and London.

The airline will base two Boeing 737-800 aircraft at Madrid. It will recruit around 100 pilots and cabin crew locally and launch six new routes that will start operating during summer 2014. Madrid is Norwegian’s fifth base in Spain, along with Alicante, Malaga, Las Palmas and Tenerife.

“We have decided to open a new base in Madrid to meet the demand for direct flights between the Spanish capital and important cities in Europe. We see major passenger potential from the main airport in Madrid,” Norwegian CEO Bjørn Kjos says.

“At the same time, it is strategically important for Norwegian to have a base in the Spanish capital in light of our presence in the Spanish market and, not least, in terms of our future plans.”

“Madrid has a unique offer for tourists and companies worldwide and thanks to Norwegian the region’s connectivity will certainly be improved,” said Ignacio González, president of the Region of Madrid.
