Norwegian sacks Swedish staff before Christmas

Managing director: “The timing is not the best we can agree with”

With just a few days to go before Christmas, Norwegian has given all of its directly employed Swedish cabin crew a memorable present – it’s given them the sack.

“What a way to say Happy Christmas!” one of the dismissed employees told the newspaper Aftonbladet.

The 52 employees were the last of 300 Swedish crew that the airline employed directly. In a letter sent to them this week, they were instead offered jobs at Proffice Aviation, an employment agency.

“The timing is not the best that we can agree with,” Krister Aarnio, managing director of Norwegian Air Shuttle Sweden told Aftonbladet. “The most important thing is that we ensure that everyone keeps their job.”

One of the employees complained that Norwegian had stopped being a caring employer: “We think it is strange. Many believe that Norwegian is such a good company, but it is not. It has not been for a long time. We can work 15 hours in one stretch.”
