Norwegian sees increasing competition from Wizz Air

Budget carrier commits to 110 A321neos worth $13.7bn
Budget carrier Norwegian is seeing increasing low-cost competition from Central and Eastern Europe, as Wizz Air continues its relentless expansion. The Budapest-based airline has committed to buying 110 Airbus A321neos worth $13.7 billion at list prices.
The memorandum of understanding states 110 firm deliveries and rights for a further 90 aircraft. The planes will be delivered between 2019 and 2024. This is the biggest single order for the A321neo. Wizz currently operates 61 aircraft on more than 380 routes from 22 bases.
“With this order we are paving the way for the next decade to ensure the growth of this business,” Wizz Air’s chief executive Jozsef Varadi said at a press conference.
Airbus says it won $57 billion worth of business for a total of 421 aircraft at the Paris Air Show this week. That contrasts with $50.2 billion for 331 aircraft for Boeing.
