A new savings plan isn’t stopping Norwegian from throwing its hat into the ring to compete with the biggest airlines.
Despite initiating a comprehensive savings plan, Norwegian is continuing to initiate new long-distance routes, now releasing details of two new seasonal links between Europe and the United States.
The first will open on June 7 when Norwegian flies four times a week between Barcelona and Chicago, while on July 2 it will embark on a route between Athens and New York JFK, also four times a week. Both are seasonal routes to be operated until October 26.
“Norwegian has its full involvement in the US and is meeting passengers’ increasing needs for several destinations from both New York and Chicago,” explains Matthew Wood, director of commercial long haul and new markets at Norwegian.
“Athens is already one of the largest European destinations and it is an exciting addition to our transatlantic route network. Barcelona, which we added two and a half years ago from the United States, is doing so well that we are adding a new route from Chicago and more frequencies from both New York and Los Angeles.”
The potential for traffic appears to be greatest in the direction from the US to both destinations, which a number of other airlines, especially American Airlines, have found out.
Between Chicago and Barcelona, Norwegian will be in direct competition with American, which flies the route daily.
From New York to Athens, its competitors are Emirates and Delta, while United Airlines flies between the Greek capital and Newark. So Norwegian is up against some of the world’s biggest airlines on the two routes.
The Greek tourism authorities are delighted, however.
“Greece is a top destination, and Norway’s exciting advertising gives more Americans the opportunity to experience what Greece has to offer,” says Elena Kountoura, the country’s tourism minister.
“This news is the answer to our desire to expand the airline connections between Greece and the United States, and we thank Norwegian for meeting their needs.”
