Olympics give boost to winning nations

Countries join Olympic gold rush with bookings rise
Countries that have enjoyed Olympic success in Rio could be in line for further gold as travellers start considering visiting them, TTG Digital reports.
Online travel agency Travel Republic says that searches for Jamaica, China, Japan and Olympic champion USA have all spiked in the wake of the games. Jamaica is the key beneficiary, with searches rising faster than Usain Bolt can run the 100m, as bookings increased by 170% during the games.
Sales were up 160% for China and the country is now in second place for Travel Republic’s Olympic destination choices for next year. The winner of the Rio Olympics, the USA, remains a popular choice for customers with a 17% increase in sales.
The UK-based OTA’s clients have also shown interest in the next host of the Olympic Games, Japan. Despite the fact the games do not begin until August 2020, bookings to the country have already increased by up to 77%.
“Consumers making these bookings almost a year in advance for far-flung – and still relatively off the main tourist trail – destinations such as Japan and China is a great testament to how strong confidence is in long-haul travel,” Naomi Wilkinson, marketing director at Travel Republic, said.
