Passenger and punctuality records in Faroes

Vagar Airport sees 7.4% more passengers in 2014

Vagar Airport in the Faroe Islands achieved a new record in passenger numbers in September, when 21,281 passengers passed through the new terminal, growth of 5.3% year-on-year. So far this year, 200,314 passengers have used the airport, an increase of 7.4%.

The airport said in a statement that there is growth both in the leisure and business segment, and it acknowledged that role of VisitFaroeIslands in “doing a great job” of promoting the islands as a tourist destination, as well as Atlantic Airways, the only airline flying regularly to and from the Faroes. The number of charter flights is also setting a record in 2014.

Since the runway was extended, new landing instruments installed and new light poles put up, Vagar Airport’s efficiency has greatly improved. The airport records and monitors closely all delays and cancellations. Once hampered by weather, punctuality of flights now stands at a record high of 99.3%.

“We at Vagar Airport are very pleased about the massive investments that have been made here at the airport over the last five years, with the record growth in passenger numbers and now also the record-high regularity,” said Jákup Sverri Kass, Vagar Airport’s director.
