Passenger killed by gunfire on plane

Airlines cancel flights to Peshawar, Pakistan

Airlines have cancelled flights to the northern Pakistani city of Peshawar after shots were fired at a Pakistan International Airlines plane as it was landing, killing a female passenger and injuring three of the cabin crew.

Some 178 passengers were on the flight from Saudi Arabia when the gunmen opened fire. Six bullets hit the plane, police said, killing the Pakistani woman. The victim’s nine-year-old daughter was sitting next to her. One of the bullets narrowly missed the captain and another hit the engine.

The Taliban have pledged to attack Pakistani government targets after officials announced a military operation against militants in North Waziristan.
