Personal shoppers target Chinese at airports

Frankfurt Airport joins others in helping Chinese passengers

Frankfurt Airport is following successes at Helsinki Vantaa, Amsterdam Schiphol and Paris Charles de Gaulle in helping passengers from China with their shopping therapy. The personal shoppers are fluent in Mandarin and know the culture and preferences of this high-spending segment of passengers. Outbound tourism in China is growing by more than 20% a year. Chinese tourists spent $55 billion while travelling abroad in 2011 and travel and tourism businesses around the world are rolling out the red carpet to make them feel welcome and more at home – a trend that calls “red carpet”.
N the free-of-charge airport shopping initiative at Frankfurt, the assistants wear orange jackets, advise Chinese travellers where to shop, help out with translating product information and assist with tax refunds. They can also escort Chinese passengers through security and on to their departure gate.
