Pilots warn more Lufthansa strikes are likely

Ten strikes in 2014 cost Lufthansa around €200mn

Vereinigung Cockpit, the active German union of pilots, is warning that more strikes at Lufthansa are “possible and likely” as a long-running clash continues into the new year over an early retirement scheme. Ten strikes organised by the union in 2014 cost Lufthansa around €200 million and hit hundreds of thousands of passengers.

The union is also concerned about Lufthansa’s plans to expand its low-cost operations to win back market share being lost to budget carriers expanding in Germany.

Both sides say they want to return to negotiations, but the union wants all issues on the table, a demand Lufthansa rejects. LH says that low-cost expansion – which is expanding from a unit that does not have the same collective staff agreements as Lufthansa and Germanwings – is not up for discussion.
