Plane crash in Tehran kills at least 39

Antonov-140 propeller aircraft crashes after take-off

An Antonov-140 propeller aircraft crashed just after taking off from Mehrabad International Airport on Sunday, coming down on a nearby road and killing at least 39 people on board.

One of the engines on Sepahan Airlines Flight 5915 was reported to have failed, according to local news agencies. It was carrying 40 passengers and a crew of eight.

Initial reports about the number of passengers killed varied, but by the end of the day several people had died of their injuries in hospital with an official agency saying 40 had died and a small number were still critical in hospital with serious burns. Some people on the ground were also injured, including employees at a glass factory.

“Both black boxes of Iran-140 airplane of Hesa Co [Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industrial Company] were found in search operations,” said Ahmad Majidi, Iran’s deputy minister of roads and urban development.
