Qatar Airways spurns Boeing for Airbus

Airline in discussions to buy up to 15 A330s

Qatar Airways says it is in talks with Airbus to buy up to 15 A330s, a deal that could be worth $3.6 billion at list prices. The airline’s chief executive, Akbar al Baker, said that the move reflected his frustrations with Boeing’s production delays with its 787 Dreamliner.
“We are talking to Airbus about A330s to fill in the gap that the Dreamliner delays have caused Qatar Airways […] Anywhere between 10 and 15 [aircraft],” he told Reuters. “It’s a new order that would be finalised by the time of the Paris Air Show in June.
Qatar expects to get compensation for delays to the 787’s delivery schedule as well as for the Dreamliners’ grounding due to battery issues.
Baker said that the grounding had cost the airline around $200 million in lost revenue up to April 2013. All five of its 787s should be back in service by the end the month.
