Qatar delays new airport opening

The planned opening was postponed after safety review

The scheduled opening on Monday of Qatar’s new international airport in Doha was indefinitely postponed after it failed to meet security standards.

The head of Qatar’s civil aviation authority said in the statement which came just hours before the scheduled first introductory flight from Hamad International Airport, that the delay was due to the need to address new safety requirements. The new safety measures were set by the Qatari civil defence. However, the airport did not specify the potential shortcomings in meeting those requirements. No new airport’s opening date has been given.

Qatar has undertaken a blanket review of all safety systems in public places since 19 people were killed in a fatal mall fire last year.

Built at a cost of almost EUR 12 billion, the airport being a key project in Qatar’s national development strategy is planned to have an initial capacity to handle 30 million passengers per year, doubling to around 50 million by the time the airport is fully operational in 2020.
