Guides on the hiking trail bring safety improvement
Guides on the mountain trail to Norway’s ever-popular Trolltunga are being credited for a drop in the number of tourists getting into difficulties on the hike to it and having to be rescued.
However, the success of the initiative to position guards on the path does not automatically mean an extension into next year, a decision on which is yet to be taken.
“The improvement has been remarkable,” Olaf Bratland of Statens naturoppsyn (Nature Conservation Authority) told the broadcaster NRK.
The spectacular but hard-to-reach rock formation, which stands 700 metres above Ringedalsvatnet Lake, is more popular than ever, with 81,655 people visiting the attraction so far this year, up 19% on 2016. In 2010 there were just 800.
In 2016, the Red Cross sent rescuers to help injured and tired tourists from the path on 40 occasions. That number is just 21 so far in 2017.
