Rescue services stretched too thin in Norway

Foreign tourists told to fend for themselves on mountain
Earlier this week, two foreign tourists in Norway realised they would not be able to make the tricky hike down from Trolltunga – one of the country’s most popular attractions – before nightfall. But because the Red Cross was already stretched too thin, it told the couple they would have to fend for themselves.
“Because of the many recent rescue missions, the Red Cross did not have the manpower to send someone to Trolltunga,” police spokesman Jan-Tore Heggholmen told broadcaster NRK.
Emergency teams have been called out to Trolltunga ten times over the last nine days.
Fortunately, the couple made contact with a cottage owner and were able to stay overnight on the mountain. Heggholmen said they were fine “but they’re going to get wet on the way down”.
The number of visitors to Trolltunga, which takes several hours to reach, has skyrocketed over the last few years, from around 20,000 in 2013 to an estimated 100,000 this year. But not everyone who tries to reach it is fit enough or equipped enough to successfully complete the hike.
