Viking Cruises to add more ocean-going ships in 2016
Viking Cruises says it will launch two more ocean-going vessels in 2016. Viking Star, the US-based company’s first ocean-going vessel, is due to launch in 2015.
The additional ships, Viking Sky and Viking Sea, will launch the following year with one possibly starting operations early in the year and the other towards the latter end of 2016.
“[The launch] is on the back of the growth of river cruising. We’ve seen phenomenal growth,” head of sales Neil Barclay said. “We can offer extended itineraries and we can offer new itineraries.”
Each of the ships will accommodate 930 passengers and offer five-star all-inclusive packages. Prices are expected to lead in at around £1,899 (€2334) for one week’s cruise to Scandinavia from the UK with a return flight.
“We are massive, we are growing, we are the market leaders in river cruise and we want to be the market leaders in ocean as well,” Barclay added.
Viking Cruises is hoping to attract a slightly younger market than is traditional in cruise, while increased time in port should also prove attractive.
Viking will also launch 10 new river cruise ships in 2015, bringing the total number to 63 and having already launched a record-breaking 14 ships this year.
