Russia considers ban on EU airline overflights

Move would hit European airlines’ busy Asian routes

Russia is reported to be considering restricting or banning European airlines from flying over its territory to and from Asia, the news agency Reuters reports citing the Russian business daily Vedomosti.

The move would significantly affect European airlines’ busy Asian routes, which would force flights into long and costly detours – putting them at a disadvantage compared to Asian rivals.

But such a move would hit Russia too, which according to Vedomosti gets around €225 million a year in fees paid by foreign airlines to fly over Siberia.

The foreign and transport ministries are reportedly discussing what action to take following European and US sanctions that grounded the Russian carrier Dobrolet.
