Saaremaa island ferry contract up for grabs

But local firm is lobbying strongly to continue lines

Estonia’s Ministry of Economic Affairs will soon announce a public procurement tender to find an operator for lines connecting the mainland with Estonia’s three islands Saaremaa, Hiiumaa and Muhu for 10 years starting autumn 2016.

To qualify, a company must have four ferries suitable for operating the routes. There may also be a clause in which the winner gives the government the right to buy out the ferries after the end of the contract period.

The lines are currently operated by Saaremaa Laevakompanii (SLK), and strong lobbying by its owner Vjacheslav Leedo means that SLK is likely to win the new tender.
