Sad reminder of ferry disaster discovered

Lifebuoy from doomed MS Estonia found in Finland
A lifebuoy from the doomed MS Estonia, which sank on a crossing from Tallinn to Stockholm 23 years ago claiming the lives of 852 people, has been found in a remote part of Finland.
The ferry sank on September 28, 1994, carrying 803 passengers and 186 crew. The vast majority died in the disaster, 501 of whom were Swedish.
A team from Finland’s forestry administration found the sad reminder of the tragedy while eradicating invasive rose bushes on the Finnish archipelago, south of the island of Jussarö – more than 100 kilometres from where the ship sank.
“It is likely that this styrofoam buoy was crushed by the high pressure at 80 metres depth, where the wreck lies, and then returned to the surface 23 years later. An eerie reminder from the past,” the Tvärminne Zoological Station wrote in a social media post.
An investigation in 1997 blamed faulty bow doors that buckled in a storm, but some relatives, shipping experts and politicians claim there was an explosion on board caused by a secret transport of military equipment.
