SAS signs deal to sell its MD-80s

Buyer not named by SAS but may be Allegiant Air

As SAS continues to renew its aircraft fleet, it has signed an agreement to sell four more of its MD-82/87 aircraft. The buyer, who is not named by SAS but is rumoured to be US low-cost carrier Allegiant Air, also has an option on a further 19 MD-82s and 10 spare engines from SAS. If that option is exercised, it will complete the long-planned phase-out of the airline’s MD-80 aircraft fleet, which was one of the biggest in the world in the mid-nineties, with over 70 aircraft in use.
The first MD-80 aircraft in this sale has already been delivered and the remaining three planes will be delivered by the end of this year. The planes and engines covered by the option will be delivered, if the option is exercised, on a gradual basis between 2013 and 2015.
