SAS to open new bases, new company

SAS unveils new licence and bases outside Scandinavia
SAS has revealed it will open bases outside Scandinavia and set up a subsidiary company with an operating license in Ireland. The new bases will be in London and in Spain.
The bases will be supplemented by an Irish air operator certificate (AOC), hence the subsidiary in Ireland. The aim is to provide a small number of departures in time for the next winter schedules for 2017-18, from the end of October.
The initiative has been started to ensure better competitiveness in the market, the airline explains, and the new routes will complement its existing Scandinavian network.
“The air travel market in Europe is experiencing intense price pressure and rising demand for leisure travel. To secure the company’s long-term competitiveness and to take an active role in the growing leisure market, SAS is now taking a further step to reduce the cost differential to newly established competitors,” the airline says in a statement.
“If SAS is to secure the long-term profitability of key traffic flows and actively participate in the growing leisure market, SAS must have the same preconditions as other market participants.”
