Second “hole” in runway this summer

London Gatwick reopens after runway closed for repairs
The main runway at London Gatwick has reopened after a second hole was discovered in the tarmac in less than three months. A similar discovery in June led to many delays.
A number of flights were forced into holding patterns on Sunday evening while others were diverted to airports such as Southampton as the runway was closed as a “precautionary measure”.
A second runway, described in press reports as a “stand-in” landing strip, was brought into operation as engineers patched up the tarmac.
Experts reportedly blame warm weather and a rise in the number of flights over the summer.
