Security experts in Sharm study terror threat

“We want to ensure we have the right information”

A security team has been sent to the popular Egyptian resort of Sharm-el-Sheikh to assess the threat of terrorism. The British government sent the experts following the roadside bombing of a tourist bus in Taba in February, according to press reports.

The UK is warning against all but essential travel to most of the Sinai peninsula. But this advice does not apply to the area within the Sharm “perimeter barrier”, which includes the airport and the areas of Sharm el Maya, Hadaba, Naama Bay, Sharks Bay and Nabq.

German tourists were pulled out of Sharm-el-Sheikh in late February after Germany changed its advice on travel to the Sinai’s holiday resorts.

“In light of the Taba incident we wanted to ensure we had the right information,” a government official told the newspaper The Telegraph. “We will be looking at the situation very closely and if anything necessitated a change we would act very quickly.”

The Taba bus bombing killed three South Korean tourists and an Egyptian driver. It was carried out by the Sinai-based group Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, which has also been involved in suicide bombings, drive-by shootings and assassinations.
