Extreme turbulence on a flight from the Middle East to Indonesia injured 31 people yesterday. Film and images of the ride were posted on social media, showing the damage the turbulence caused and the cries of passengers.
Etihad Airways flight EY474 from Abu Dhabi to Jakarta hit severe and unexpected turbulence just 45 minutes before arriving at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
The Airbus A330-200 landed safely. Nine passengers were taken to hospital, while 22 others were released from the airport clinic after being treated for minor injuries.
Photos on social media show a hole in an overhead luggage bin and some oxygen masks dangling. One passenger wrote that the turbulence happened over Sumatra.
