Shark attacks affecting tourism, mayor warns

Fourth fatal shark attack in seven months at location near Perth

The mayor of Busselton, a town in Western Australia, is calling for a shark cull after the fourth fatal attack took place within seven months. Ian Stubbs is the mayor of the town where the 33-year-old victim, Peter Kurmann, lived with his family. He was killed while scuba diving off the coast of Stratham Beach near Perth, a popular tourist destination. A four-metre long great white shark is believed to have been responsible for the attack.
The mayor is asking the state government to watch for and kill sharks that swim close to the coast, something that could be arranged even though the great white is a protected species.
