Singapore Airlines’ $7.5 billion Airbus deal

SIA to order five more Airbus A380s and 20 more A350s

In a $7.5 billion deal, Singapore Airlines will order five additional Airbus A380s and 20 more A350s. SIA’s chief executive, Goh Choon Phong, says the order reflects the airline’s confidence in the strength of the market for premium full-service travel. As reported, IATA said recently that the number of passengers flying first and business class rose 8.5% in August, year-on-year.
“This major order will provide us with additional growth opportunities and is consistent with our longstanding policy of maintaining a young and modern fleet,” the SIA CEO said.
Singapore Airlines currently operates 19 A380-800s and already has firm orders for 20 A350s, deliveries for which are due to start in 2017. However, the Singapore flag carrier is also making an effort to cut costs, freezing cadet-pilot recruitment and cutting flying hours for junior pilots.
In related news, Singapore Airlines’ long-haul low-cost subsidiary Scoot will buy 20 Boeing 787 aircraft for delivery starting in 2014. These 787s had originally been ordered by SIA and will replace Scoot’s Boeing 777-200 fleet.
