Singapore Airlines in massive aircraft order

SIA orders $17 billion in aircraft from Airbus, Boeing

Singapore Airlines has announced it will spend $17 billion on 30 Airbus and 30 Boeing aircraft. The orders reveal how the airline is betting on a pickup in the premium-class market.
The orders also confirm that SIA will be the long-awaited launch customer for a stretched version of the 787 Dreamliner – a 320-seat aircraft being designed mainly for crowded intra-Asian routes.
Despite weaker-than-expected full-year results posted this month, Singapore Airlines is continuing its big strategy overhaul, pushing into the low-cost segment as well as expanding its regional network.
“[The orders] demonstrate our commitment to the Singapore hub and our confidence in the future for premium full-service travel,” Goh Choon Phong, SIA’s chief executive, said in a statement. “Today’s aircraft orders are among the biggest in Singapore Airlines’ history, helping to ensure that we retain our industry leading position.”
