Singapore Michelin Guide debut to lure foodies

Two hawker stalls among 29 restaurants to get stars
Singapore is now the only place in the world where you can get a S$4 (€2.70) Michelin-star meal. Two hawker stalls have been given a one-star rating in the first ever Singapore Michelin Guide.
The street-food vendors are Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle in Crawford Lane and Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle at the Chinatown Food Complex.
Tai Hwa Pork Noodles owner Tang Chay Seng was nonchalant about the award during a gala dinner at Resorts World Sentosa but said he was surprised by the inclusion of his stall in a list filled with fine dining establishments. He stressed, in Mandarin, that they “are not the same” and that it “cannot be compared”.
On the other hand, Chan Hon Meng of Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle, seemed overwhelmed by the attention. “I feel very privileged and am very happy with this recognition. I hope every year there will be a hawker that gains such a recognition. Nothing will change for us,” he said.
In all, 22 establishments received a one-star rating and six restaurants got two stars. The only restaurant given three stars was Joël Robuchon’s eponymous restaurant in Sentosa. The veteran chef now has 30 Michelin stars across his restaurant empire and is the chef with the biggest number of stars under his belt.
The new Michelin guide should help put Singapore in the global spotlight and boost the country’s reputation as a gastronomic hub for foodies from all over the world.
The Bib Gourmand list was released earlier this month. Traditional food centres in Singapore take up half of the total 34 spots in that list, which covers 19 different cuisines ranging from Indian and Cantonese to Vietnamese and even Turkish, a testament to the diversity of Singapore’s dining scene.
