Single-runway airport hits 44mn

Norwegian helps Gatwick set passenger world record
London’s Gatwick Airport has broken the world record for passengers per year at a single-runway airport, hitting the 44 million mark after 49 consecutive months of growth.
Driven largely by long-haul expansion, the airline handled more than 3.3 million passengers in March, a year-on-year increase of 8.4%. The increase helped drive an 8% overall boost on passenger numbers to 43,969,000.
“Gatwick is booming,” said chief executive Stewart Wingate. “We have just hit 44 million passengers a year – a world record for a single runway airport – and a mark that some predicted we would not hit until 2035, in 18 years’ time!”
The airport launched 20 new long-haul routes last year, with more planned for this summer including Norwegian’s forthcoming routes to Seattle and Denver, as well as to Xi’an, the airport’s third destination in China.
Traffic to North America grew particularly strongly at Gatwick, up 37% in March, with services to LA, Boston and Toronto growing the most.
