Sixt narrows gap between rental and car sharing

A new app provides access to the continuous connectivity of its fleet and is “defining a new product category”.

The European multinational car rental company Sixt has launched a new car sharing offer, ‘SIXT share’, promising “maximum flexibility and diversity” by combining rental and sharing.

The company says it is breaking down the barriers between car rental and car sharing. Through the continuous connectivity of its fleet and by merging car rental and car sharing products, it is “defining a new product category”.

Via its new app, SIXT share “will give customers the freedom to return their vehicles flexibly at over 2,200 SIXT stations worldwide and in all business areas”.

SIXT share is available in Germany as of today and its launch in other European countries is planned by the end of the year.

“By continuously connecting our vehicles, we are breaking down the barriers between car rental and car sharing,” Alexander Sixt, chief strategy officer at Sixt, explains.

“With SIXT share, we are not only launching another car sharing brand but are defining a new product category by merging car rental and car sharing.”

Price per minute
Customers will be able to rent vehicles for a few minutes or up to 27 days, getting “the most affordable rates” thanks to an artificial intelligence-based pricing system.

If the minute price for the period driven exceeds the established daily price, customers automatically pay the lower daily price.

“SIXT share is as close to the customer as possible,” says Nico Gabriel, managing director of SIXT X division.

“No other offer takes into account the freedom of choice and flexibility of the customer to this extent and on this qualitative level. SIXT share is another step on the path towards our goal of a fully integrated and limitless mobility.”

The market research institute Global Market Insights expects total worldwide turnover of the car sharing market to be more than €9 billion by 2024.

Rent or ride
Customers can access SIXT share via its new app, which also has the products SIXT rent and SIXT ride, offering “a real alternative to their own car”.

Through SIXT rent, the app becomes a “digital counter” where customers can select their vehicle digitally at top airports in Germany up to 30 minutes before the start of the rental period, then go to the car park without going to the office and open the vehicle with the app.

With SIXT ride, customers can be picked up in less than ten minutes in 250 major cities in Europe and the USA and are able to book transfers in advance in over 60 countries and 500 cities.
