Ski coach crash blamed on long distances

One man killed and 24 injured as coach returns from Italy

Long-distance driving appears to have been the reason for a coach crash in France killing one man and injuring 24 passengers, some seriously. The coach carrying a school ski party was returning to the UK from the Italian resort of Valle d’Aosta early on Sunday morning when the driver is believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel. One teenager is in a critical condition. The accident occurred near Chalons-en-Champagne, north-eastern France. The ski holiday had been organised by the school trip specialists Interski, an operator featuring resorts throughout the Aosta valley.
“An accident occurred at 02.30 hours on the morning of 19/02/12 at Chalon en Champagne,” reads a message on the Interski website. “A coach returning to the UK from the Aosta Valley, Italy, left the motorway and came to rest at the bottom of an embankment. We are informed of five serious injuries and 22 minor injuries (all of whom are hospitalised). Those uninjured are being cared for at a sports complex in the region. A rescue vehicle has been dispatched from the UK to return to the UK those considered fit to travel.”
