Slick nears Canaria beaches after ferry crash

Crews try to clean up three-kilometre diesel slick
The popular holiday island of Gran Canaria is threatened by a three-kilometre long diesel slick, created after a ferry carrying 140 passengers crashed into a concrete breakwater in the port of Las Palmas.
Coast guard crews are working to break up and clean the diesel slick following the accident late on Friday, which injured 13 people, severely damaged the bow of the ship and ruptured underwater fuel pipes.
Ferry operator Naviera Armas said the ship had suffered a technical fault and power cut.
“Experts do not believe there is risk to the environment,” said Fernando Clavijo, president of the regional government.
However, beaches around Las Palmas and Telde have been temporarily closed as a precaution.
