‘Snow problem’ for Greenland’s Arctic games

Nuuk temperatures unseasonably warm this winter
The organisers of the Arctic Winter Games in Greenland would not normally be worried at all about the necessary conditions being in place. But this year, even in Nuuk, temperatures have been unseasonably warm this winter.
The biennial games are scheduled for March, with cross-country and downhill skiing, snowboarding, biathlon, snowshoe and snowskate events. Snowfall in Nuuk has been only moderate and recent temperatures reaching as high as 10°C meant that some of it had started to melt.
Snow and temperatures well below zero are forecast for the coming days, however. And just in case, there are contingency plans – snow-making machines, trucking snow from around the city to the ski areas, or even shortening the runs.
