Stockholm’s historic PUB to be Scandic hotel

Scandic consolidates position as city’s biggest operator

Following an acquisition of the historic PUB department store building on Torgvågen in Stockholm, it’s been announced that it will be turned into a hotel, Scandic Haymarket.

Together with real estate company AxFast, Scandic Hotels says it is creating “one of Stockholm’s most exciting grand hotels” in the building, which will be “a vibrant meeting place for both Stockholmers and visitors alike”. No opening date has been given.

PUB was originally opened in 1882 and is one of Stockholm’s oldest department stores. It was here that Greta Garbo started as a shop assistant before her Hollywood days.

Scandic says it will draw inspiration from the stylistic ideals of the 1920s, and the interior will be renovated to recreate the original look and feel of the building. The total area of the hotel will be close to 16,500m2, divided into around 400 guest rooms and 3,000m2 of restaurant and meeting facilities.

“With Scandic Haymarket, we want to create a unique grand hotel for both Stockholmers and travelling guests,” said Frank Fiskers, Scandic’s president and CEO. “We will let the grand meet the playful and create an exciting encounter between the past and the present, old and new. We will refine and highlight the building and the area’s unique character and history. The hotel will be a powerful element of a new character in Hötorget Square with its concert house, movie theatres, hotel, restaurants and marketplace.”

Erik Lindvall, CEO of AxFast: “The area between Norrmalm and the west of the city is merging, creating the feeling of a larger, more vibrant downtown. Together with Scandic, we can refine this area further and contribute to a more exciting neighbourhood.”

Scandic is already the biggest hotel operator in the Stockholm region with nearly 6,100 hotel rooms, of which almost 4,500 are in the city. The city has an expected annual growth rate for overnights of more than 4%. In 2014, Scandic expanded its capacity in the city by 1,200 rooms with the opening of HTL Kungsgatan and the transformation of three Rica hotels into the Scandic Gamla Stan, Scandic Klara and Scandic Kungsgatan. Also Jamie’s Italian was launched at the Scandic Anglais.
